Mufin brings the world a little closer with new music discovery engine

New music discovery site employs advanced audio ‘fingerprinting’ technology to let music fans find new songs and artists regardless of geography or popularity

Berlin, October 08, 2008 – Mufin is launching a new way for music lovers everywhere to discover new songs and artists with their audio fingerprinting technology. Now available in private beta, mufin’s music discovery engine enables people to move beyond current geographic and marketing boundaries and tap into a global library of artists through sound-based algorithm recommendations.

Unlike current music discovery applications or Internet radio stations that are based on popularity in the mainstream, community recommendations and subjective editorial references, mufin is focused squarely on a song’s musical characteristics and construction to encourage greater diversity in music discovery. Mufin employs sophisticated audio identification technology that was co-developed at the Fraunhofer Institute, the creators of the MP3 format. Mufin generates a unique ‘fingerprint’ for each song based on more than 40 characteristics such as tempo, instruments, sound density, and rhythm structure.

To uncover new music, users simply search for their favorite song or artist in mufin's database which has millions of songs from major and independent artists. In a split-second, mufin's music discovery engine presents a selection with songs that sound similar using semantic algorithms that determine unique audio fingerprints for each track. Users are also able to listen, purchase, or create playlists featuring their new musical discoveries.

Additionally, mufin’s dashboard gives people the opportunity to uncover new songs and artists by checking out the latest tracks, fresh discoveries and top searches within the mufin community.

“Mufin’s unique approach to music discovery puts geographic borders, big marketing machines, and genre classifications aside. As soon as a song has been indexed it can be instantly recommended even if no one has ever heard it before. An unknown artist can be recommended alongside Coldplay if the songs have similar metrics. It all comes down to the music,” said Jürgen Jaron, President at mufin.

Mufin also adds a social component to music discovery by integrating with MySpace’s social network. With the mufin widget for MySpace, people can access mufin’s discovery interface and song catalog right from their MySpace profile, as well as share new discoveries with friends in their social network.

Everyone can get a taste of mufin by visiting its private beta site at www.mufin.com where they just might discover their next favorite song and artist.
